Marcial Maciel Degollado (1920–2008) was a Mexican priest known for founding the congregation of the Legionaries of Christ and the lay movement Regnum Christi. From the mid‑20th century he focused on forming young people and building a network of Catholic institutions, gaining papal recognition and rapidly extending influence in academic and apostolic contexts internationally. His institutional career, however, was shadowed by repeated and serious allegations of sexual abuse, leading a double life and immoral conduct. Internal investigations and inquiries by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reached conclusions that resulted in his removal from public ministry by Pope Benedict XVI, and the Legionaries later acknowledged responsibility for abuses committed by their founder. Maciel’s case had a deep impact on the Church: it prompted debates about oversight and governance of religious institutes, protection of minors and internal reforms within the congregation he established. His legacy remains controversial—marked both by the expansion of an institutional enterprise and by accountability for crimes and conduct that shook the trust of the faithful and Church institutions.
