Marcus Eoin Sandison is a Scottish electronic musician, best known as one half of the duo Boards of Canada alongside his brother Mike Sandison. Born of childhood experiments recording and manipulating tapes at home, the duo became a professional project in the 1990s, adopting analog techniques, vintage synthesizers and sampling as their core aesthetic. Marcus’s work with Boards of Canada received critical recognition with the debut album Music Has the Right to Children (1998), regarded as a landmark of contemporary electronic music. The pair later pursued darker sonorities and esoteric themes on Geogaddi (2002), and more organic structures on The Campfire Headphase (2005), continuing to draw on 1970s media and to explore memory, nostalgia and environmental themes. Known for a reclusive stance and cryptic promotional strategies — including the use of subliminal messages and alternate-reality games — the brothers built an aura of mystery that has fed critical interest and cultivated a devoted fan base. Boards of Canada have also been cited as precursors to strands such as intelligent dance music and hauntology. Marcus Eoin’s legacy lies in his contribution to the sonic language of modern electronic music: his approach to texture, analog timbre and atmospheric narrative helped establish aesthetic reference points that have influenced generations of producers and musicians.
