Margaret Daniel, publicly known as Margaret Truman, was a multifaceted figure in American cultural and journalistic life. The only child of President Harry S. Truman, she first made her name as a lyric soprano, performing with major orchestras in the country and recording for RCA Victor from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s. Her musical career encompassed recitals, radio and television appearances, and concerts with ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra. After marrying journalist Clifton Daniel, she left her singing career and worked as a presenter and journalist, co-hosting the program Weekday with Mike Wallace and writing for various publications. In subsequent years she established herself as an author: she produced biographies, including a widely praised book about her father, and a series of detective novels set in Washington, D.C., which achieved notable editorial longevity. A public figure from youth—frequently present at presidential events and campaigns—Truman moved between journalistic coverage and literary writing, leaving a legacy both in memoirs about the White House and in American popular fiction.
