Margaret Fuller (Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli) was a journalist, literary critic, translator, and one of the most influential voices of American Transcendentalism. Renowned for her erudition—she was regarded as the most well‑read person in New England in her time—she became the first American woman war correspondent and the first full‑time reviewer on the U.S. press. Her book Woman in the Nineteenth Century (1845) is considered the first major feminist work in the United States, advocating education, employment, and greater autonomy for women. Prior to that, Fuller organized the “Conversations,” courses designed to address women’s lack of access to higher education, and served as the first editor of the Transcendentalist magazine The Dial. Hired by the New‑York Tribune, she also worked as a correspondent in Europe, where she engaged with Italian movements and figures such as Giuseppe Mazzini. Her personal life and legacy were marked by tragedy: she had a relationship with Giovanni Ossoli and died in 1850 in a shipwreck that also claimed her family; her body was never recovered. Fuller left a lasting influence on the movement for women’s rights and inspired later leaders of American feminism, although her reputation underwent revision and editorial suppression after her death.
