Marguerite Yourcenar was a writer and essayist born in Belgium and later naturalized French, recognized for her contribution to historical literature and the reconstruction of ancient times. Her best-known work, Mémoires d’Hadrien (Memoirs of Hadrian, 1951), became a modern classic by combining scholarly rigor and literary imagination in the voice of the Roman emperor Hadrian, exploring power, love and philosophy. Throughout her career she published novels, essays, poetry and memoirs, winning numerous awards — among them the Prix Femina and the Grand Prix of the Académie française — and received the Erasmus Prize for her influence on European culture. She translated and had works translated, collaborating closely with her partner Grace Frick in bringing her translations to the English-speaking world. In 1980 she was the first woman elected to the Académie française, a milestone in her institutional recognition in France. She spent long periods in the United States, where she taught and established residence, and became an American citizen in 1947. Her house on Mount Desert Island now serves as a memorial to her life and work.
