Mariano Moreno was a lawyer, journalist and a central political figure in the early stages of Argentine independence. Trained in Chuquisaca and influenced by the ideas of the European Enlightenment, he distinguished himself as a lawyer advocating for indigenous causes and as a writer and translator, producing Portuguese translations of works such as The Social Contract and founding the newspaper La Gazeta de Buenos Ayres, regarded as a landmark in the country’s journalism. As Secretary of War of the First Junta, Moreno played a decisive role in consolidating the new government after the May Revolution, promoting firm measures against factions that supported the old regime and organizing military expeditions to Paraguay and Upper Peru. He has also been credited with directing the repression of counter‑revolutionary movements and with the execution of monarchist leaders. His political activity polarized contemporaries: allies saw him as the uncompromising voice of republican reform, while opponents preferred more moderate positions. Sent on a diplomatic mission to the United Kingdom, he died at sea before reaching his destination; his death aroused suspicion and helped build a legendary image. Moreno left a lasting legacy in the press and in the political debates of Argentina’s first decades.
