Marie Adélaïde of Savoy was a princess of Savoy who became Duchess of Burgundy and Dauphine of France as the wife of Louis, Duke of Burgundy. Born in Turin, affiliated with the House of Savoy and maternally connected to the Orléans family, her arrival at the French court refreshed the atmosphere at Versailles and earned her the confidence of Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon. Endowed with considerable political influence in the court environment, Marie Adélaïde intervened to promote allies and thwart enemies, actively taking part in marriage arrangements and decisions that shaped internal alliances. Her rivalry with the Duchess of Orléans and actions against figures such as Louis Joseph, Duke of Vendôme, illustrate her role in the power games of the reign. Mother of the future king Louis XV, her life was marked by motherhood and tragedy: of three children, only one survived the 1712 epidemic. Marie Adélaïde herself died young of complications from measles, and is remembered for the courtly influence she exercised and for her role in the succession that ensured the continuity of the dynasty.
