Marie-Lætitia Eugénie Catharine Adélaïde Bonaparte was a princess of Bonapartist origin and, by marriage, Duchess of Aosta. The youngest daughter of Prince Napoléon and Maria Clotilde of Savoy, she occupied a dynastic crossroads linking the houses of Bonaparte and Savoy, which gave her marriage political significance in the aftermath of the Second French Empire.
In 1888 she married her maternal uncle, Amadeo, Duke of Aosta and former King of Spain, a union that provoked controversy because of the consanguinity and the age difference but also raised hopes of a Bonapartist restoration among some monarchist circles. The marriage reinforced ties between dynasties and resonated at the European courts of the time.
Throughout her life she was associated with representative duties and the courtly world between France and Italy, reflecting the dynastic tensions and alliances of the late nineteenth century. Her legacy is chiefly linked to the symbolic role she played within the network of relations among royal houses and to efforts to preserve the Bonaparte family's political and social influence.
