A countess and controversial figure of Central European aristocracy, Marie Louise von Larisch-Wallersee became known as lady‑in‑waiting and confidante to Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and belonged to the morganatic branch of the Bavarian dukes. Her position at the imperial court and family ties to the House of Wittelsbach gave her access to centers of power, but also brought responsibilities and scandals that shaped her life. Larisch gained international notoriety for her role in the so‑called Mayerling Affair, acting as an intermediary between the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Rudolf, and his lover Mary Vetsera; the episode ended in the deaths of both and led to her exclusion from the court circle. She later published memoirs and other works, often written with the help of a ghostwriter, which disclosed details of imperial life and damaged reputations. Throughout her life she endured ostracism, shifts in fortune, and several marriages, also serving as a nurse during World War I and taking part in film productions about the empress. Her legacy is that of an intimate witness to a period of dynastic and social transition in Central Europe, remembered both for her privileged access to the court and for the controversies that followed her.
