Marie Marvingt was a prominent French athlete, mountaineer, aviator and journalist, recognized as a pioneer of early 20th‑century aviation. She became known for an exceptional multisport career, winning prizes in swimming, cycling, fencing, shooting, athletics, gymnastics, equestrianism, winter sports and especially mountaineering, where she was the first woman to climb several peaks in the French and Swiss Alps. In aviation, Marvingt set records in ballooning and moved on to powered flight; during World War I she became the first woman to fly combat missions as a bomber pilot. At the same time she trained as a surgical nurse and combined the two skills: she was the first qualified surgical nurse who was also a pilot, advocating for and helping to develop aeromedical transport services. A memoirist and charismatic public figure, she adopted nicknames such as “La fiancée du danger” and “La reine de l'air,” reflecting her image as an explorer. Her legacy includes contributions to women’s aviation, to aeromedical rescue and to the visibility of women in military and sporting activities.
