Marion Zimmer Bradley was an American writer of fantasy and science fiction whose work achieved wide popularity from the 1960s through the 1990s. She is best known for the Darkover series — a cycle of science fiction set on a planet where psychic schools develop — and for the Avalon Cycle, especially The Mists of Avalon, which retells Arthurian legends from a female perspective and was a New York Times bestseller.
Born into a poor family, she began writing at a young age to help support her household, initially publishing pulp and Gothic romances before establishing a substantial body of work in fantasy and science fiction. She lived in Berkeley, California, left more than fifty titles, and was an influential figure in the American science fiction community, supporting other writers and genre events.
After her death, her public image was affected by serious allegations of familial abuse that emerged years later; because of this and other contested aspects of her legacy, caution is advised when discussing these reports.
