Marjorie Grene was an American philosopher whose work linked continental philosophy, philosophy of science and, pioneeringly, philosophy of biology. With initial training in zoology and a doctorate in philosophy, she focused on fundamental questions about life, evolution and the relationship between the natural sciences and philosophical thought, challenging core elements of the modern synthesis in evolutionary theory. Over decades she published, edited and translated numerous works—essays, books and anthologies—that help map debates on existentialism, scientific reduction and the unity of knowledge. Her output includes seminal texts and historically important collaborations, among them a history of the philosophy of biology written with David Depew. A teacher at institutions such as the University of California, Davis, and holder of academic honors, Grene also promoted interdisciplinary dialogue among biologists, historians and philosophers. Her legacy remains in the development of critical studies of evolutionary theory and in establishing philosophy of biology as an academic field.
