Scottish actor Mark McManus was best known for his long-running, popular portrayal of Chief Inspector Jim Taggart in the eponymous police series, a role that brought him national recognition and a lasting legacy on British television. He began his career with amateur theatre groups in Australia, where he also worked in local television and film, appearing in notable titles such as 2000 Weeks (1969) and in programmes like Skippy and Homicide. Returning to the United Kingdom in the 1970s, he appeared in a range of television and theatre productions, including roles in The Brothers and the series Sam, demonstrating versatility across social drama and classic plays. His career encompassed memorable stage characters and screen appearances in films and series over more than three decades. Personal life and health affected the end of his career: he struggled with alcohol-related health problems and died in 1994. He received posthumous recognition for his contribution to the performing arts, and the series Taggart continued to honour his character in subsequent stories.
