Mark Edward Waugh is a former Australian cricketer and sports commentator who played Test cricket internationally from 1991 to 2002 and made his One Day International debut in 1988. He was noted as a right‑handed batsman often slotted at No. 4 in Tests and, in ODIs, evolved from an all‑rounder into a prolific opener, becoming Australia's leading run‑scorer in the format for many years. Waugh was part of Australia’s 1999 World Cup–winning team and held notable World Cup records: he was the first player to score three centuries in a single tournament (1996) and is the only Australian to total four centuries and more than 1,000 runs across World Cups. His elegant technique and wide range of strokes drew comparisons with the game’s great stylists and praise from coaches and teammates. Beyond his batting, he was recognized as one of the best slip fielders in the game’s history, holding the record for most Test catches by a non‑wicketkeeper until 2009. After retiring from playing, he served as a national selector until 2018 and subsequently moved into television commentary. From a sporting family and the twin brother of Steve Waugh, his career was marked by consistent high performance, decisive contributions in tournaments, and a technical influence on subsequent generations.
