Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (1731–1802) was a central figure in colonial society and in the early years of the American Republic as the wife of George Washington. She inherited a large fortune and properties from her first marriage to Daniel Parke Custis, managing extensive lands and a considerable enslaved workforce, which gave her social standing and economic influence in 18th-century Virginia. She married George Washington in 1759; although the couple had no children together, George raised Martha’s two surviving children from her first marriage. During the Revolutionary War she was present at her husband’s encampments, helping to maintain troop morale. During the presidential years (1789–1797) she served as the first woman to perform the social duties now associated with the first lady, hosting receptions and representing the new administration in New York and Philadelphia. Known for her public bearing and domestic management, Martha left a legacy connected both to the emerging institutional role of the first lady and to the social complexities of her time, marked by slavery and the dynamics of rural property in Virginia. She was buried at Mount Vernon, where her letters and biographical records help to illuminate her life and historical context.
