Martina Hingis is a former Swiss professional tennis player, regarded as one of the leading players of the 1990s and 2000s. She reached world No. 1 in singles for 209 weeks and in doubles for 90 weeks, holding both top spots simultaneously for 29 weeks. Over her career she won 43 WTA singles titles and 64 doubles titles, totaling 25 Grand Slam victories (five in singles, 13 in women’s doubles and seven in mixed doubles). Hingis set several age-related records, becoming the youngest Grand Slam champion and the youngest world No. 1, and dominated Tier I events with a record 17 titles. Ankle injuries and later a hip problem prompted temporary retirements; however, notable comebacks in 2006 and from 2013 onward focused mainly on doubles, where she added more major titles and won the silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Her honors include election to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013 and appointment as a global ambassador for the institution. Hingis was also the first Swiss player to win a major and to reach the top of the world rankings, leaving a legacy of refined technique, tactical intelligence and lasting influence on women’s tennis.
