Martinus Nijhoff was one of the leading Dutch poets of the first half of the 20th century, also active as a playwright, translator, critic, and essayist. The son and cultural heir of a publishing family in The Hague, he completed a degree in letters after initial studies in law and joined influential editorial teams such as De Gids, besides contributing as a critic to the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant. His emotional and intellectual life, marked by long‑term relationships and creative partnerships, influenced part of his work as a translator and dramatist. As a poet, Nijhoff became known for combining traditional forms—above all the sonnet—with a modern language close to everyday speech. Narrative works such as the long poem Awater and the collection Het uur U reveal his interest in the mystery of ordinary things and in recurring themes such as motherhood, childhood, the soldier, and religious motivation. His emphasis on the autonomy of the poem and on an “ordinary vocabulary” placed him in opposition to contemporary aesthetic trends. Also recognised as a translator and the author of biblical plays gathered in Het heilige hout, Nijhoff was posthumously awarded the Constantijn Huygens Prize and lent his name to a translation prize established in 1953. His work left a lasting mark on Dutch poetry by opening the way for a modern poetic language without breaking with formal tradition.
