Mary Ellis (born May Belle Elsas) was an American actress and singer whose career unfolded largely in the United Kingdom. Trained as a lyric soprano, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1918, creating the role of Genovieffa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and appeared in Broadway productions, including the title role in Rose-Marie (1924) and various Shakespearean parts. After moving to England in 1930, she established herself in the West End and became known as the leading lady in the premieres of Ivor Novello’s shows: Glamorous Night (1935), The Dancing Years (1939) and Arc de Triomphe (1943). She also appeared in 1930s films and filmed adaptations, and worked in radio and television. During the Second World War she devoted herself to welfare work in hospitals and to concerts for the troops; after the war she returned to the stage in plays by Noël Coward and Terence Rattigan, receiving notable praise for performances such as Millie in The Browning Version (1948) and Volumnia in Coriolanus (1952). A career spanning more than half a century produced autobiographical publications and left a lasting mark on British theatre; she was the last living performer to have created a role in a Puccini opera and to have sung alongside Enrico Caruso.
