Mathilde de Morny, known as "Missy" or "Max," was a Parisian high-society figure and an artistic presence of the Belle Époque. Born into the nobility — a granddaughter by marriage of Joséphine de Beauharnais — she became notable both for her social standing and for behavior considered scandalous: she adopted masculine clothing and manners, smoked cigars, and frequented bohemian and intellectual circles. Her notoriety grew because of an openly romantic life with women, maintaining public relationships with figures such as the writer Colette. The liaison with Colette produced notable episodes, including joint appearances in performances and the purchase of a property in Brittany; the breakup and the ensuing public scandal damaged her family position and finances. Throughout her life, Mathilde became a symbol of the tensions around gender and sexuality at the turn of the century: contemporaries viewed her as a deviant figure, while modern historians debate her gender identity without reaching a definitive consensus. Ruined and isolated during the Second World War, she died by suicide in 1944; her burial at Père-Lachaise was supported by Sacha Guitry.
