Matthew Barney is an American contemporary artist and filmmaker whose work crosses sculpture, photography, drawing, and film. Known for combining performance, installation, and cinema, Barney investigates relationships among geography, biology, geology, and mythology, also addressing themes of sexuality, the human body, and conflict. His practice pairs large-scale objects with series of images and sound scores to form interdependent aesthetic systems.
Between 1994 and 2002 he created The Cremaster Cycle, a sequence of five films that expand into photographs, drawings, and sculptures and have been described as a landmark of avant-garde cinema. Another emblematic project is Drawing Restraint, begun in the late 1980s and developed across multiple episodes that articulate the idea of growth through constraint; Drawing Restraint 9 (2005) included film, sculptures, and a collaborative soundtrack. Later large-scale projects include River of Fundament (2014), a cinematic opera inspired by Norman Mailer, and Redoubt (2018–19), which interweaves myth and environmental concerns.
Barney gained international recognition at biennials and exhibitions, building a body of work noted for formal ambition and the fusion of narrative, body, and object. His practice has been the subject of major retrospectives and museum exhibitions, establishing him as an influential figure in contemporary art.
