Matthias Claudius was a German writer, poet and journalist whose work influenced literature and the press at the end of the eighteenth century. After initial studies in theology and law, he worked as an organist and civil servant before establishing himself in Hamburg as an editor and later director of the periodical Der Wandsbecker Bothe. Under his direction the magazine became an important literary forum, attracting contributors such as Goethe and figures associated with Sturm und Drang.
Claudius used the publication to set out his reflections on life, death, evil and injustice from a personal Christian standpoint distinct from theological orthodoxy and Enlightenment rationalism. Although the periodical ultimately failed commercially, he collected a large body of work in eight volumes — epigrams, dialogues, fables, chronicles, essays and translations — that secured his reputation as a publicist and cultural polemicist.
Yet his enduring fame rests chiefly on his lyric pieces: quatrains and poems of domestic, meditative subject matter that inspired composers such as Franz Schubert and were incorporated into the German song and motet repertoire. His oeuvre as a whole shows an author who combined religious faith, popular sensibility and criticism of the spirit of his age.
