Max Aub (Max Aub Mohrenwitz) was a writer of Franco‑German origin who built his literary career between Spain and Mexico, becoming a central figure in the literature of the Republican exile. The author of novels, plays, short stories and essays, he was noted for narrative experimentation and for his commitment to the memory of the Spanish Civil War. His best‑known work is El laberinto mágico, a cycle of five novels that reconstruct, in a chorus of voices and fragmentary perspective, the experience and trauma of the conflict.
Exiled after the Francoist victory, Aub established an intense intellectual activity in Mexico: he published anthologies, journals and critical editions, and kept diaries and compendia on contemporary Spanish literature. Works such as Diario de Djelfa and his numerous short‑story collections attest to his versatility between short prose and theoretical essay.
Throughout the twentieth century he maintained interests in the avant‑garde and in the intersections between literature and other arts—notably in his engagement with cinema, reflected in interviews and projects concerning Luis Buñuel. His editorial and critical legacy, preserved through foundations and posthumous editions, has ensured a lasting influence on studies of exile, war narratives and formal renewal in the Spanish language.
