Max Decugis (Maxime Omer Mathieu Décugis) was one of the leading figures of French tennis in the early decades of the 20th century. A dominant player before the First World War, he won 32 singles titles, claimed the Wimbledon junior tournament in 1896–1897, and was the first Frenchman to take an international title, in Hamburg (1901). His career, which spanned roughly 25 years, included notable victories such as the Queen’s Club Championships in 1904, wins over the era’s champions, and Grand Slam doubles titles, most notably Wimbledon in 1911 with André Gobert.

Decugis also shone at the Olympic Games: he won a silver medal in doubles in 1900 and a gold in the mixed doubles alongside Suzanne Lenglen in Antwerp (1920), totaling three Olympic medals. He represented France in the Davis Cup, later served as captain, and worked as an administrator and contributor within the tennis community — founding the magazine Tennis in 1910 and, in subsequent decades, serving on committees and holding technical positions within the federation.

Off the court, he held various occupations — merchant and farmer, for example — and served in the First World War, finishing as a sub-lieutenant with decorations. His career left both a sporting and institutional legacy in French tennis, remembered for his competitive achievements and his influence on the organization and promotion of the sport.
