Max Kaus was a German painter and printmaker associated with the second generation of Expressionism. Trained in decorative arts in Berlin, his work was deeply influenced by the group Die Brücke and by artists such as Erich Heckel, from whom he learned lithographic techniques during World War I. From 1918 onward lithography became an important part of his technical repertoire. Best known for his landscapes, Kaus also worked intensively on portraits, especially after the war, when he depicted figures marked by the tension and displacement of the era. In the 1920s he rose to prominence through exhibitions and participation in modernist groups such as the Freie Sezession; in 1926 he took a chair in landscape art at a Berlin school of arts and crafts. With the arrival of the Nazi regime his modernist production was labeled “degenerate”: works were removed from public collections and his professional activity was restricted, culminating in the loss of much of his output during the bombings of World War II. After 1945 he concentrated mainly on teaching, influencing later generations and helping to preserve the continuity of Expressionism in postwar Germany.
