Max Ophüls was a filmmaker and stage director born in Germany whose career spanned theatres and film industries across Europe and the United States. Trained in the theatre, he directed around two hundred plays before moving into cinema in the late 1920s, where he distinguished himself as a screenwriter and director. His early European films include Liebelei (1933), which already displays his recurring concerns: the vulnerability of women in the face of an unforgiving society and the tension between outward glamour and inner ruin. Persecuted by antisemitism, he went into exile in France in 1933, became a French citizen in 1938 and continued to make literary adaptations and domestic dramas, collaborating with actresses such as Edwige Feuillère and Danielle Darrieux. After a period in Hollywood during the Second World War, he made Lettre d’une inconnue (1948) in English before returning to Europe, where he directed key titles such as La Ronde, Le Plaisir, Madame de… and Lola Montès. His stylistic hallmark — fluid camera movements and complex use of cranes, dollies and long tracking shots — influenced later generations of directors. Celebrated for combining technical virtuosity with a sensitivity to stories about fate and society, he left a lasting legacy on twentieth‑century European cinema.
