Max Slevogt was one of the leading German Impressionist painters, alongside Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. Known for his light palette and energetic brushwork, he was especially noted for landscapes — such as Vineyards in Bloom and Palatinate Landscape — as well as portraits, religious works, watercolors, prints and illustrations. His pictorial language retains a narrative quality, often placing domestic scenes and familiar figures at the center of his work. Trained at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and refined at the Académie Julian in Paris, Slevogt absorbed French influences, notably the work of Manet, which helped soften his palette and strengthen the Impressionist tendencies in his art. He took part in the Berlin Secession and pursued varied activities, including caricatures for magazines and opera stage design — he was responsible for the set for Don Giovanni in Dresden in 1924. His trip to Egypt (1914) produced a significant series of paintings and drawings, and his service as an official front-line painter during the First World War confronted him with the thematic challenges of the conflict’s horrors. A member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, he left a legacy that includes murals, panels and a large body of works now held in museums and collections across Germany.
