Mei Lanfang was one of the most celebrated artists of Peking opera in modern Chinese theatre, revered for his portrayal of female roles (dan), especially the qingyi — gentle, reserved women. Born into a family of performers, he began training very early and built a career of roughly fifty years characterized by consistent technique and innovation, originating the style known as the “Mei School.” His excellence in female portrayal and in the kunqu tradition established iconic roles such as Du Liniang (The Peony Pavilion) and Bai Suzhen (Legend of the White Snake), earning him national prestige and international recognition. He was also identified as one of the “Four Great Dan.” Mei promoted Chinese opera abroad with tours to Japan, the United States, and Europe, influencing Western artists such as Bertolt Brecht and fostering cultural ties with figures from film and theatre. After 1949 he held leadership positions in opera and research institutions and had part of his work published and recorded, leaving a lasting legacy in the pedagogy and performance of traditional Chinese opera.
