Merce Cunningham was one of the leading choreographers and innovators of American modern dance for more than five decades. As a dancer and founder of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, he developed his own technique and a radical approach to space, time and the relationship between movement and sound, creating over 200 choreographies and hundreds of site-specific “Events.”
His work was notable for multidisciplinary collaborations with artists such as John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, among others, which extended the impact of his work beyond the field of dance. With Cage he explored chance procedures — including the I Ching — to break down traditional narratives and open up new formal possibilities.
Cunningham was also a teacher who trained generations of dancers who later formed their own companies, and his company maintained close partnerships with musicians and visual artists, with a repertoire ranging from contemporary composers to figures from experimental rock. He received international honors such as the MacArthur Fellowship and the National Medal of Arts, and his legacy was institutionalized by a preservation plan announced in 2009.
