Michael Beck is an American actor who rose to prominence in the late 1970s for the iconic role of Swan in Walter Hill’s The Warriors (1979). A graduate in Economics from the University of Mississippi, he began acting in university productions and further trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. His performance as Swan established him as a memorable presence in cult cinema of the period. After the success of The Warriors, Beck worked in both film and television, starring in the musical Xanadu (1980), where he demonstrated singing and dancing skills, and appearing in a variety of other productions, including TV movies and police series. In the 1980s he took on roles in westerns and low-budget action and science-fiction films, alongside television work that broadened his visibility. In the 1990s he remained active in TV movies and guest spots on series such as Se ha escrito un crimen and Babylon 5, and later lent his voice to the character Swan in the video game based on The Warriors as well as to narrated audio projects. Married since 1980 to composer Cari Taylor, Beck is still chiefly remembered for the role that defined his career and for his place in the imagination of 1970s and ’80s cult cinema.
