Michel Deville was a French filmmaker who worked as a director, screenwriter and producer, noted for his formal elegance and subtle handling of couple relationships. Trained on the job as an assistant director, he took his first professional steps alongside Henri Decoin and in 1961 created his own production company to make his films. In the 1960s and 1970s he forged a creative partnership with screenwriter Nina Companeez, producing works that blended poetic humour and social observation, such as Benjamin ou les Mémoires d’un puceau and L’Ours et la Poupée.
Across his career Deville explored original formal devices — from the use of subjective camera in Dossier 51 to the merging of interior thought-voices in La Maladie de Sachs, along with elliptical sequences and experiments without dialogue. This attention to form won him critical recognition and major awards, including several César Awards and the Prix Louis-Delluc. From the mid-1980s he collaborated with his wife Rosalinde Damamme as co-author and producer on many of his films.
Also the author of volumes of poetry, Deville left a recurrent imprint on French cinema through his combination of formal inventiveness and narrative refinement, remaining a point of reference for filmmakers interested in the meeting of style and character psychology.
