Michel Fourniret was a French serial killer responsible for the proven abduction, rape, and murder of seven young people between 1987 and 2001; he was also convicted in the death of a man and suspected in at least four other killings. Known as “The Ogre of the Ardennes,” he became notorious for the violence of his crimes and for using his own residence, the Château du Sautou, to conceal victims and human remains. Over decades he targeted young people aged 12 to 22, typically stopping women on the road, luring them into his car and taking them to remote locations where they were assaulted and later killed. His third wife, Monique Olivier, eventually denounced him in 2004; she was also convicted of complicity for luring victims to the couple. Fourniret was arrested in 2003, extradited to France in 2006, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008. After his death in 2021, investigations were reopened into at least 21 unsolved cases, with DNA testing conducted to check for possible links. The case is remembered for the severity of the victims’ suffering, the involvement of a criminal couple, and its impact on investigations of sexual crimes in the Ardennes region.
