Michel-Marie Poulain was a French artist and performer whose career crossed cabaret, circus and painting. Self-taught as a painter, he became known for landscapes and still lifes, with works exhibited from 1931 in Parisian salons such as the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, as well as in galleries in Montmartre and on the Left Bank. In the late 1930s he opened the cabaret-gallery Le Vol de Nuit in Paris, a space where his images and his persona were presented as part of the show.
As a drag performer and variety artist, Poulain also worked as an acrobat and cabaret dancer, living between male and female personae throughout his life. During the 1930s he corresponded with sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, and his personal experiences — including a period of military service, imprisonment in a Stalag during the Second World War and an escape in 1941 — affected both his biography and his public visibility.
After the war, Poulain resumed his artistic career and, in 1946, underwent sex reassignment surgeries. His work and public persona questioned gender norms on the twentieth-century French cultural scene, leaving a memory as an active painter in Parisian circles and as a controversial and notorious figure of his time.
