Mickey Spillane was an American crime novelist, known as a central figure in 20th-century pulp fiction. He rose to fame with the creation of hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer, the protagonist of I, the Jury (1947), a book written in a few days that launched his career and sold millions of copies. Over the following decades, the Mike Hammer series established Spillane as a popular author, with estimated sales between 100 and 200 million copies.
His work was notable for its direct language, explicit violence, and sexually charged scenes—elements that stirred controversy among literary critics while attracting a large readership. In the 1940s and 1950s he also wrote for comics and produced short stories that broadened his command of genre narratives.
Beyond writing, Spillane made forays into film—he even played Mike Hammer in The Girl Hunters (1963)—and influenced later noir writers and popular culture. His legacy remains tied to strengthening pulp detective fiction and demonstrating that entertainment literature could achieve massive commercial success.
