Miguel Ângelo Laporta Nicolelis is a Brazilian physician and neuroscientist known for advances in brain–machine interfaces and the development of neuroprostheses for the rehabilitation of patients with paralysis. Trained and awarded a doctorate at the University of São Paulo, he established an innovative approach by recording simultaneously from large populations of neurons, contributing to the emergence of population neurophysiology as a central pillar of modern neuroscience. He built his career in the United States at Duke University, where he was Professor of Neurobiology and Biomedical Engineering, cofounded the Center for Neuroengineering and led one of the most influential laboratories in neural systems research and motor control. His group demonstrated that primates could control robotic arms with brain signals, a milestone that influenced neural implant technologies and companies in the field. In Brazil, he led the Walk Again Project, which demonstrated the feasibility of exoskeletons controlled by brain activity and suggested possibilities for sensory and motor recovery in prolonged protocols. He founded institutions focused on research and scientific training in the country, integrating advanced laboratories with educational and community programs. An author of popular science and a public figure in debates on science and education, he has received international awards and is a member of scientific academies, regarded as one of Brazil’s most prominent voices in the field of neuroengineering.
