Mike Wallace was an American journalist and television presenter, best known for his role as a reporter and co-editor of CBS’s 60 Minutes from its debut in 1968. Trained in radio journalism, he built a solid career in radio and television from the 1940s, served in naval communications during World War II, and became noted for incisive interviews with world leaders, scientists and cultural figures. In subsequent decades he became known for an aggressive, investigative style, securing high-impact exclusives — including meetings with leaders such as Ayatollah Khomeini, Vladimir Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — and producing reports that earned him 21 Emmys as well as Peabody and DuPont‑Columbia awards. He was also the author of memoirs and works on journalistic practices. Wallace spoke publicly about receiving treatment for depression, helping raise awareness of mental health. His career influenced generations of television reporters, leaving a legacy defined by the pursuit of exclusive interviews, investigative reporting and contributions to television news formats.
