Michael E. Brown is an astronomer and professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology, known for his work discovering and characterizing trans-Neptunian objects. His team identified numerous bodies beyond Neptune, including Eris, Makemake, Sedna, Quaoar, Orcus and Gonggong—contributions that substantially expanded knowledge of the population of dwarf planets and objects in the trans-Neptunian belt. The discovery of Eris had a direct impact on the definition of a planet in the Solar System, a process that led to Pluto’s reclassification as a dwarf planet; Brown himself described his role in that debate with humor and recounted it in his book How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming. Beyond discoveries, his work includes training researchers and leading observing projects that mapped the region beyond Neptune. His career has been marked by academic and public recognition: he was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, received awards such as the Harold C. Urey Award and the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, and has an asteroid named in his honor. Some disputes over discovery priority prompted debate between teams, but did not undermine Brown’s standing as a central figure in the study of trans-Neptunian bodies.
