Michael Richard Pence is an American politician and lawyer who played a prominent role in United States politics in the 2000s and 2010s. A six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives (2001–2013), he served as Chair of the House Republican Conference (2009–2011) and became associated with the conservative movement and the Tea Party. As governor of Indiana (2013–2017), he implemented large tax cuts and increased investments in education, and he signed restrictive abortion laws as well as a controversial “religious freedom” law that was later revised after pushback from business groups and the public.

In 2016 he was the vice-presidential nominee on Donald Trump’s ticket and was sworn in as vice president in 2017. In the administration he worked on areas such as coordinating the National Space Council and, in 2020, leading the White House Coronavirus Task Force. After the Trump–Pence ticket lost the 2020 election, Pence fulfilled his constitutional role as president of the Senate during the Electoral College certification session on January 6, 2021, despite political pressure and the violent storming of the Capitol.

A graduate in history from Hanover College and of law from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, Pence also worked as a lawyer and radio host before entering Congress. His career includes a shift from Democratic activism in his youth to leadership in Republican conservatism, with a legacy tied to conservative fiscal policies, traditional social positions, and a central role during a polarized period of American politics.
