Milton Spinoza Plesset was an American applied physicist whose career focused on fluid mechanics and nuclear engineering. He is known for fundamental contributions to the study of multiphase flows, bubble dynamics, and reactor safety, work that led to his election to the National Academy of Engineering in 1979 and to the ASME Fluids Engineering Award in 1986. Plesset gave his name to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation, used to describe the dynamics of a spherical bubble in a liquid, and is coauthor with Christian Møller of the perturbative theory known as Møller–Plesset. His academic training includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, a doctorate from Yale, and a long association with Caltech, where he worked with figures such as Robert Oppenheimer and taught until becoming a full professor in 1951. During World War II and the postwar period he also worked in the aerospace industry (Douglas Aircraft) and maintained collaborations with researchers such as John A. Wheeler. His technical legacy continues to influence cavitation theory, perturbative methods, and practical engineering applications involving bubbles, vibration, and nuclear system safety.
