Monica Cecilia Abbott is a former American pitcher widely regarded as one of the greatest softball players in collegiate and professional history. She rose to prominence at the University of Tennessee, where she became the school’s first All-American and set NCAA Division I records for wins, strikeouts, shutouts and innings pitched, including seasons with more than 500 strikeouts and a single-season record of 724 strikeouts. Her college career earned her honors such as USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and the Honda Award. Internationally, Abbott joined the United States national team in 2005, helping the country win titles including the 2006 and 2010 World Championships, the Softball World Cup, and Olympic silver medals at Beijing 2008 and Tokyo 2020, as well as contributing to multiple international tournament victories in 2018–2019. At the 2008 Olympics she threw the first perfect game in Olympic softball history. Professionally, she starred in National Pro Fastpitch and in the Japanese league, winning multiple championships and being named Finals MVP in five NPF titles. In 2016 she signed a high-profile contract with the Scrap Yard Dawgs that had significant financial impact, cementing her reputation as a leading figure and pioneer in raising the profile and value of women’s sport.
