Monika Mann (1910–1992) was a writer and columnist of German origin, the daughter of the Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, whose personal and artistic life unfolded between Europe and the United States. Initially trained as a pianist, she abandoned a musical career after unsatisfactory results and turned to writing, where she produced her most substantial work during long years on Capri between 1954 and 1986, publishing books and articles for magazines.

Her life was marked by dramatic episodes: she married in 1939 and, in 1940, lost her husband in the sinking of the ship on which they were traveling; she herself survived after hours adrift. She emigrated with her family following the rise of Nazism, lived in Sanary-sur-Mer, in Florence and later in the United States, where she obtained American citizenship in 1952 before returning to Europe.

Born into a notable cultural lineage — the granddaughter of Júlia da Silva Bruhns and the daughter of Katia Pringsheim — Monika grew up in a deeply literary and artistic family environment, which shaped her critical eye and her career as a columnist. She spent her final years in Germany with her brother’s family and left a body of work marked by cosmopolitanism and the memories of a life shaped by historical ruptures.
