Moritz Schlick was a German philosopher and physicist, a central figure in logical positivism and the intellectual leader of the Vienna Circle. Trained in physics, he published early work on optics and the theory of relativity, then turned to epistemological and aesthetic concerns, addressing problems of science and the nature of truth according to modern logic. His most notable work includes The General Theory of Knowledge, in which he criticized the notion of synthetic a priori knowledge, and contributions in ethics and aesthetics, such as Problems of Ethics, which broadened the scope of logical positivism. In 1922 he organized the meetings that gave rise to the Vienna Circle, bringing together thinkers like Carnap, Hahn and Neurath, and maintained an influential dialogue with Wittgenstein. Schlick taught for many years in Vienna, helping to consolidate a scientific, anti-metaphysical view of philosophy. With the rise of Nazism many members of the Circle emigrated; Schlick remained in Austria until he was assassinated in 1936, an event that marked the weakening of Vienna’s intellectual climate and the end of an important phase of logical positivism.
