Multatuli, the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker, was a Dutch writer whose work left a lasting mark on literature and public debate about colonialism. A civil servant in the Dutch East Indies, he witnessed abuses and injustices that he forcefully exposed in Max Havelaar (1860), a novel denouncing the exploitation of the local population by the colonial administration and which became his best-known work. Dekker’s administrative career, marked by promotions and clashes with local authorities, ultimately led to his resignation and return to Europe, where he began a prolific literary career under the name Multatuli. In addition to Max Havelaar, he published satires, aphorisms and collections gathered in the volumes Ideën, and plays such as De bruid daarboven. The impact of his work crossed borders: although its reception in the Netherlands was initially controversial, the book gained international recognition and influenced debates on colonial reform. His memory is preserved by a society devoted to the author and by a museum in his birthplace, reflecting a lasting legacy in Dutch literature and nineteenth-century social criticism.
