Nelly Sachs was a German-Jewish writer, poet, and playwright whose artistic and personal life was shaped by exile and the horrors of Nazism. Drawing on the traumatic experience of World War II and the loss of family members, her poetry—initially influenced by German Romanticism—evolved into a lyrical and prophetic voice that gave poetic form to the suffering of the Jewish people. Her most important works include the poetry collections In den Wohnungen des Todes (1947) and Sternverdunkelung (1949), and the verse play Eli (1951), in which she reimagines, in symbolic language, the tragedy of a Polish boy as a metaphor for collective suffering. In Flucht und Verwandlung (1959) she deepened themes of exile and metamorphosis, reaffirming her place in postwar German literature. Internationally recognized, she received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966, shared with Shmuel Yosef Agnon, an honor that cemented her reputation as a poetic interpreter of the Israeli fate. She spent most of her life in Sweden, where she translated and wrote amid health problems; her work remains a literary testimony to the Shoah and to the endurance of Jewish memory.
