Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was a Russian composer and a central figure of the group known as The Five, celebrated above all as a master of orchestration. His orchestral output — notably Scheherazade, Capriccio Espagnol, and the Overture to The Great Easter Festival — is part of the standard repertoire thanks to its instrumental color and its use of melodies and rhythms drawn from folklore and popular tales. As an advocate of a nationalist musical style, Rimsky-Korsakov combined Russian traditions with exotic elements, a practice often described as musical orientalism. At the same time, his role as a teacher at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory led him to assimilate and pass on formal techniques of the Western tradition, training generations of composers and helping to establish a professional Russian school. Alongside his musical career, he maintained ties with the Imperial Navy and served as an inspector of naval bands, an experience that deepened his knowledge of brass and winds and influenced his orchestration. He left fifteen operas, suites and numerous orchestral works, as well as a pedagogical legacy that influenced Russian and foreign composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
