Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez was the metropolitan archbishop of San Salvador from 1977 to 1980 and a central figure in the Salvadoran Catholic Church during the escalation of violence that preceded and accompanied the Salvadoran Civil War. Initially regarded as conservative, his personal experience of the assassination of friends and community leaders led him to become a vigorous critic of human rights abuses and a defender of the so-called “preferential option for the poor.” Using homilies, Catholic radio, and diocesan publications, he became known as “the voice of the voiceless,” taking a public stand against extrajudicial executions, death squads, and state repression. His actions drew both praise—he was compared to Gandhi and Martin Luther King for his advocacy of nonviolence—and criticism from conservative sectors and parts of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In March 1980 he was assassinated in the context of political violence; his death solidified his image as a martyr among social movements and church communities. He was later recognized by the Catholic Church as a martyr and saint, and his legacy remains associated with the defense of human rights, solidarity with the poor, and denunciation of structural injustices in the period before and during the civil war.
