Otto Heinrich Warburg was a German physiologist, physician and biologist whose work on cellular respiration and metabolism deeply influenced twentieth-century biology. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1931 for his discoveries concerning respiratory enzymes, Warburg showed that tumor cells produce large amounts of lactic acid and proposed that cancer growth is linked to an alteration in energy metabolism, with glucose fermentation predominating over oxidative mitochondrial respiration. Trained in chemistry and medicine, he conducted research at European institutions, including the Naples Zoological Station, and served as a cavalry officer in World War I — an experience he regarded as formative. His hypothesis of a metabolic origin for cancer generated wide interest and controversy: although it is now recognized that mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressors are central to oncogenesis, Warburg’s work helped stimulate the development of the field of cancer metabolism. Beyond his scientific output and long-standing recognition culminating in the Nobel, Warburg’s legacy endures in debates about the relationship among metabolism, mitochondria and cancer, influencing contemporary investigations into cellular bioenergetics.
