Pat Kane is a Scottish musician, journalist and political activist, best known as one half of the pop duo Hue and Cry, formed with his brother Greg. He became known on the British cultural scene both for his musical career and for his public activity in debates about Scottish identity and governance. Active in self-government movements in the 1980s and 1990s, Kane was one of the founders of Artists for an Independent Scotland and took part in public and editorial initiatives that engaged with Scottish cultural nationalism. In 1990 he was elected Rector of the University of Glasgow, a three-year post that brought him political and academic visibility. In the 1990s he moved into journalism and presenting television and radio debates, contributing to outlets such as Channel 4, BBC2 and BBC Radio Scotland. In 1999 he joined the founding team of the Sunday Herald and continues to contribute occasionally to publications such as The Guardian and The National. In 2004 he published The Play Ethic: A Manifesto for a Different Way of Living, a work that distills his thinking on work, creativity and lifestyle, and since then he has promoted seminars and lectures on the subject.
