Édouard-Henri Avril, better known by the pseudonym Paul Avril, was a French painter and illustrator noted for his work in the erotic genre. He began his career after serving as a sous-lieutenant in the Franco-Prussian War, where he was decorated, and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying in the studios of Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann. Exhibitions at the Salon de Paris marked his activity as a portrait and landscape painter before he turned primarily to illustration.
Avril gained recognition for illustrating literary works issued in limited, collectible editions, collaborating with publishers such as Albert Quantin and Charles Hirsch. He produced engravings and drawings for authors including Octave Uzanne, Théophile Gautier and Pierre Loti, often working with his brother Paul Victor Avril, an engraver and photographer. His name is chiefly associated with books of erotic subject matter published outside conventional commercial channels, frequently as subscription editions or in small print runs.
Paul Avril’s renown rests on the technical quality of his plates and on the influence he exerted over illustrated erotic iconography at the turn of the 20th century. His work remains represented in bibliographic and museum collections, where his engravings are valued both for their draftsmanship and for the historical context of their publication.
