Paul Bremer is an American diplomat and executive whose career spans high‑level public service and work in the private sector. A career diplomat, he served in the State Department from 1966 to 1989, including a posting as ambassador to the Netherlands and holding positions related to counterterrorism. In 2003 he was appointed by the George W. Bush administration as administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, a role in which he served as the chief executive until the transfer of sovereignty in June 2004. After leaving public life he devoted himself to private and personal pursuits, maintaining a presence in debates and publications on security and reconstruction.
