Paul Ehrlich was a German physician and scientist whose work was decisive for hematology, immunology, and the emergence of antimicrobial chemotherapy. He developed tissue-staining techniques that made it possible to distinguish cell types and diagnose blood diseases, contributing to modern laboratory methodology. From these studies he formulated the theory of specific receptors and popularized the metaphor of the “magic bullet” to describe agents that attack microorganisms without harming the host. In therapeutics, his laboratory discovered arsphenamine (Salvarsan) in 1909, the first effective treatment for syphilis and a landmark in pharmacological chemotherapy; Neosalvarsan later followed. He also took part in the development of antitoxin for diphtheria and drugs against sleeping sickness. These advances cemented his international reputation and influenced generations of biomedical research. In 1908 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for contributions to immunology. Founder and first director of the institution that now bears his name, he left a lasting legacy in immunological theory and in methods of diagnosis and therapy against infections, and is often referred to as the “father of immunology.”
